Colorado Department of Transportation
Engineer in Training
April 2024 - January 2025
I was hired onto the Materials and Documentation Team where I learned about BABA (Buy America, Build America), Mechanistic Engineering Design, and coding with R.
• Leveraged R to analyze 64 million data points across 24 years of project records on asphalt and concrete usage, determined real-world road lifespans and informed CDOT cost-analysis for specific material overlays
• Developed training to field workers on the accurate completion of required CDOT documentation for collaborative Local Agency/CDOT projects, improving compliance and project efficiency
• Maintained and updated CDOT regulations pertaining to steel rod manufacturers, ensuring adherence to quality standards through regular communication and collaboration

One of the projects I was in charge of was reviewing and updating our steel rod manufacturing regulations to be in compliance with our internal expectations, and external regulations like Buy America, Build America (BABA). As a part of this I toured a facility to review their operations in person, confirming compliance visually.

Steel Manufacturing Processes and Regulation

CDOT Spends more than 30% of its annual construction and maintenance budget on pavements needing maintenance and rehabilitation. With this in mind, I was asked to update a study to quantify the different types of asphalt and concrete life spans, and how associated overlays and rehabilitation techniques lasted.
Associated Skills and Knowledge
-
Mechanistic-Empirical Design
- R Code to analyze 64 million data points of roadway data
- Including: IRI, Cracking (longitudinal), Binder Type, Mile Markers
Office of Process Improvement Intern
February - December 2024
I worked with this department of CDOT for the better part of a year to support an culture of innovation through internal competition, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
• Promoted a culture of innovation and change management by working with a team to identify inefficiencies, onboard new employees, and facilitate informational events for CDOT.
• Created and distributed content highlighting employee contributions, including writing articles and producing videos to showcase innovations and their positive impact.
• Enhanced team efficiency and knowledge sharing by developing resources for onboarding new interns, training them on software and LEAN principles, and maintaining the team's website to improve accessibility and workflow.
Working on this team really cemented a love for state and local government for me. The passion the staff had for the work they did, and the tireless hours they put in inspired me immensely.
